Mr. Jack Clark, Co-founder and Head of Policy at Anthropic, a US-based AI research company, delivered this message during the session “Inside the Event Horizon: Why Everyone Should Take AI Progress Seriously” at the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings. He highlighted that the world is entering a critical period of transformation, as AI has the potential to accelerate scientific and technological progress, from solving mathematical problems and advancing biological research to supporting drug discovery. These developments could boost productivity and open the door to new innovations.

However, AI's rapid advancement brings not only opportunities but also challenges, including cybersecurity risks and potential disruptions to labour markets. Clark stressed the importance of taking these changes seriously, preparing for their far-reaching implications, and establishing appropriate governance frameworks to ensure that the benefits of AI can be harnessed safely and shared widely.
