Indonesia Elevates the Prambanan Shiva Festival as a National Tourism Driver
The Indonesian government is promoting the Prambanan Shiva Festival as a flagship national tourism event. The festival is expected to help increase both domestic and international tourist visits.
Prambanan Temple, where the festival takes place, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and is recognized as a masterpiece of ninth-century Hindu architecture. It holds strong potential for spiritual and pilgrimage tourism.
The festival comprises several events, with the main highlight being the Dipa Festival, during which thousands of oil lamps (dipa) are lit and accompanied by the sound of damaru instruments in the temple complex. The festival culminates in the Mahashivaratri celebration on February 15–16 and is not only a religious observance but also a tourism event that can support the local economic ecosystem.
This development underscores the importance of managing religious and cultural heritage sites like Prambanan not only as tourist attractions, but also as sacred spiritual spaces.
