การเสริมสร้างความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศในกลุ่มสมาชิกอาเซียนมิได้จำกัดอยู่เพียงกลไกทางการทูต แต่ยังหยั่งรากลึกผ่านการแลกเปลี่ยนภูมิปัญญาและวิถีชีวิตริมน้ำที่เชื่อมโยงกัน ดังที่ปรากฏในการนำ "เรือกระด้ง" หรือ "เถวี่ยน ทุง" (Thuyen Thung) เอกลักษณ์พื้นบ้านจากสาธารณรัฐสังคมนิยมเวียดนาม มาสร้างประสบการณ์ใหม่ในแหล่งท่องเที่ยวริมน้ำของจังหวัดกาญจนบุรี นับเป็นการผสานเสน่ห์ของสองลุ่มน้ำเข้าด้วยกันอย่างงดงาม

From Vietnam's "Basket Boat" Wisdom to the Diversity of Cultural Tourism in Thailand

The strengthening of relations among ASEAN member states extends far beyond formal diplomacy — it is rooted in the exchange of wisdom and shared riverside ways of life. Nowhere is this more evident than in the arrival of the "Basket Boat," or Thuyen Thung, a cherished folk heritage of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, now offering visitors a unique experience along the waterways of Kanchanaburi. It is a seamless blend of the spirit of two great river cultures.

The basket boat traces its origins to 19th-century Vietnam under French colonial rule, born from the resourcefulness of local fishermen who sought to adapt and push back against the burden of steep boat taxes imposed by colonial authorities. Crafted from tightly woven bamboo in the shape of an oversized basket and sealed with natural resin to keep water out, these vessels proved remarkably sturdy, stable, and well-suited for navigating narrow waterways. Over time, the basket boat became an enduring symbol of fishing communities across Vietnam — most notably in Hoi An — and stands today as a cultural legacy that speaks to the creativity and resilience of the region's people.

In Kanchanaburi, the basket boat has found a new home, transforming the province into a model for cross-cultural tourism. Gliding along the Kwai Noi River in these distinctive vessels, visitors do more than enjoy the scenery — they connect with the living heritage of a neighboring nation. Bringing Vietnamese wisdom into a Thai setting adds a fresh dimension to the local tourism experience while serving as a powerful symbol of openness and the shared riverside spirit that binds the region together. More than a recreational activity, it is an act of cultural diplomacy — a reflection of borderless cooperation that will continue to strengthen people-to-people ties across ASEAN for generations to come.
